Started in 2001, the .NAME extension is the single TLD meant for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domains remained online.
